Big Game Hunting in Hawaii: Your Adventure Awaits

July 22, 20254 min read

Big game hunting in Hawaii may not be the very first thing people think of when they plan their tropical vacation. They think beaches. Hula girls. Maybe a mai tai with one of those tiny umbrellas in it. But once you step off the resort map and onto the red earth of Molokai  –  once you hear the crunch of kiawe under your boots and spot the glint of antlers at sunrise  –  it hits you.

This is wild country. And the game here is real.

At Kaluakoi Outfitters, we guide hunters from all walks of life across this rugged terrain.

Because big game hunting in Hawaii isn’t about trophies  –  though there are trophies. It’s about connection and adventure.

Wait  –  Big Game Hunting in Hawaii? What’re We Hunting For?

Oh yeah. We’ve got game.

The islands may be small, but what they lack in size they make up for in biodiversity and challenge. Here’s what you might come across on the islands:

  1.  Axis Deer

Originally from India, now wild on Molokaʻi and Maui. They’re sleek, fast, and spooky as hell. Axis deer can hear you thinking. Spot-and-stalk with these guys is a test of patience and wind-reading. These are what you’ll be hunting during your guided hunt with us.

  1. Hawaiian Black Hawaiian Sheep (aka Mouflon hybrids)

Majestic, smart, and often found high on the ridges.

  1. Feral Goats

Don’t laugh  –  goats in the wild here are elusive, sharp-eyed, and often roam in steep terrain. They’ll make you work for every shot, and they’re damn tasty too.

These aren’t farm animals. These are island-born, mountain-bred, full-speed feral survivors. And every one of them deserves your respect.

Why Hunt Big Game with Kaluakoi Outfitters

We don’t do canned hunts. We don’t promise success. What we offer is knowledge of the land, a deep-rooted respect for the animals, and a local perspective that you simply won’t get from reading forums or watching YouTube.

We’ve walked this terrain for generations. We know everything there is to know about the land and about big game hunting in Hawaii.

Our guides are hunters first, but we’re also storytellers, teachers, trackers, and sometimes therapists.

We’ll talk you through a tough shot or a missed one. We’ll share what we know about Molokai’s ecology, its history, and why this island matters so much to us.

Come correct, and we’ll take you deep into the backcountry  –  the kind of spots most people don’t even know exist. Just you, the land, the game, and the silence.

What to Expect: The Reality of Hawaii Big Game Hunting

  • You walk a lot. Sometimes miles. Sometimes uphill both ways.

  • You’ll need to know your gear. Or at least be willing to learn it.

  • You might miss your chance. And that’s okay.

  • You’ll earn every opportunity. No handouts from the forest.

We’ll help you dial in your rifle or bow. We’ll prep you on shot placement, wind, terrain, and what to do once the animal’s down. And yes, we’ll help you field dress and pack out  –  we’re not monsters.

But we won’t sugarcoat it: it’s not easy.

That’s what makes it worth doing.

What Kind of Hunter Are You? (It Doesn’t Matter)

Whether you’re:

  • A first-timer with nerves

  • A seasoned bowhunter chasing your bucket list

  • A subsistence hunter looking to fill the freezer with ethically harvested protein

  • Or someone who just wants to unplug and chase something real for once

You’re welcome here.

We’ve had father-son pairs, solo female hunters, guys from New York in brand-new camo, and quiet uncles from Hana who barely say a word until the deer’s down.

Hunting in Hawaii can Help Hawaii

Axis deer, in particular, are invasive. Left unchecked, they tear through native vegetation, compete with cattle, and throw ecosystems out of whack. Hunting them  –  especially on Molokaʻi  –  is part of caring for the land.

We encourage you to take your meat. We’ll help you break it down, ice it, and pack it out. Axis is some of the best venison you’ll ever eat  –  lean, clean, and perfect for the grill.
